Steam won't connect on mass Sierra 10.12

I was running into this odd issue after upgrading to OS X 10.12 and nothing I would do seamed to resolve it.  Tired tracking down error messages, reinstalling steam, changeling to beta and back, and other fixes.  Ended up doing the following fix which straightened everything out.

Installed the OS X Command Line Tools.

• Open Terminal.
• Type in xcode-select --install and press enter.
• Click install in the popup dialog.

A very quick and simple fix, though I'm not entirely clear why it was necessary.  I did have the command like tools set up before I upgraded so maybe something broke.  I also had a similar issues with Parallels for Mac after doing the upgrade.
